Description
What is Sildenafil?
Sildenafil tablets are often referred to as generic or cheap Viagra. Both Viagra and Sildenafil contain the same active ingredient.
Viagra is a brand of Sildenafil marketed by Pfizer. However, the active ingredient is available from other manufacturers at a lower price.
Sildenafil is a phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitor that works by relaxing the blood vessels, increasing the blood flow to the penis during sexual stimulation. This helps to improve the quality of erections.
During sexual arousal, tissues within the penis release a chemical called cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) which causes vasodilation (dilation of the blood vessels), increasing blood flow to the corpora cavernosa – a pair of cylindrical chambers which fill with blood, producing an erection.
PDE5 inhibitors, such as Sildenafil, stop the enzyme (phosphodiesterase) from degrading the cGMP. These cause blood vessels to stay dilated, resulting in a longer-lasting erection.
The medicine typically starts to work between 30 and 60 minutes after taking it, though the tablet can be taken up to 4 hours before engaging in sexual activity.
At least two-thirds of men who took Sildenafil for erectile dysfunction reported an improvement in erections. Please understand that Sildenafil is not an aphrodisiac and does not cause sexual excitement. Taking a tablet will not instantly cause an erection, but will make it easier for an erection to happen when sexually stimulated.
Warning: You should never take treatments for erectile dysfunction alongside medicines for premature ejaculation.
What is erectile dysfunction?
Erectile dysfunction is a term that broadly covers a wide range of symptoms. It can explain the inability to obtain an erection, the inability to sustain an erection or the inability to climax.
Numerous physiological and psychological issues can cause erectile dysfunction.
Psychological causes of erectile dysfunction include:
- Stress
- Anxiety
- Depression
Physiological causes of erectile dysfunction include:
- High blood pressure
- High Cholesterol
- Hormone deficiency (low testosterone)
- Deformation or damage to the penis
Erectile dysfunction may not affect men all the time. It is possible to experience erections in the morning soon after waking up, but not experience erections during sexual activity. If this is the case, an emotional factor may be at play.
Speak to your doctor about the options available, including cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), sex therapy or other psychotherapy treatments.
Sufferers of erectile dysfunction experience it differently from one another, which is why there are a variety of treatments for this condition, including different medications and psychologically therapeutic techniques.
What type of erectile dysfunction is Sildenafil suitable for?
Sildenafil is an erectile dysfunction medication that is suitable for those who have trouble obtaining an erection.
Where Cialis and Levitra work by sustaining an erection for someone who is already aroused and sexually stimulated, Sildenafil works similarly to Viagra, in that it increases blood flow to the penis just before sex begins.

Take one Sildenafil tablet an hour before having sex. Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water.
Sildenafil can be taken with or without food, although it may take longer to work if taken after a heavy meal.
