How long does a Saxenda pen last?
The Saxenda pen is designed to deliver a specific number of doses of the medication. The pen is labelled with the number of doses it contains.
For example, the Saxenda pen may contain either 15 doses or 18 doses, depending on the medication’s strength and the patient’s needs. Once the pen has been used to deliver the full number of doses, it should be disposed of and replaced with a new pen.
The dose of Saxenda will depend on the patient’s specific needs and the healthcare provider’s recommendations. The usual starting dose is 0.6 mg once a day. The dose may then be increased to 1.2 mg once daily after one week and then to the maintenance dose of 3 mg once daily after four weeks.
Please understand that the following is a guideline. Your prescriber will need to monitor you while taking Saxenda. If they feel that increasing the dose is unsuitable, which may happen if a higher dose of liraglutide is not well tolerated, they will not increase the dosage until they believe it is safe.

Some common Saxenda side effects include:

The side effects listed above should subside on their own after a few days or weeks as your body adjusts to the medicine.

Allergic reaction
Do not take Saxenda if you are allergic to liraglutide or other ingredients in Saxenda, such as:
- disodium phosphate dihydrate
- propylene glycol
- phenol
- water for injection
Signs of an allergic reaction include:
- Chest tightening
- Dry, red, and cracked skin
- Itchy, red, watery eyes
- Raised, itchy, red rash (hives)
- Swelling of the lips, tongue, eyes or face
- Wheezing or difficulty breathing
In cases of an allergic reaction, stop using Saxenda and go directly to your nearest accident and emergency department.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Do not take Saxenda if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
It is unknown how Saxenda affects a child’s development during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
If you become pregnant while taking Saxenda, inform your doctor right away.
Other safety information
Saxenda is not suitable for people who take insulin or another GLP-1 receptor agonist for the treatment of diabetes, as it may increase your risk of hypoglycaemia. Saxenda is not a substitute for insulin.

Do not take Saxenda past the expiry date printed on the packaging.
Do not leave your Saxenda pen in your car or anywhere else where it may get too hot. Store in a refrigerator (2°C to 8°C). Do not freeze. Keep away from the freezer compartment.
Do not attempt to inject Saxenda if any part of it has frozen.
Do not expose your pen to dust, dirt or liquid, as this may damage the pen’s mechanism.
Do not drop your pen, as this can damage the pen.
Do not attempt to dismantle or refill your Saxenda pen. The weight loss pens are pre-filled and cannot be refilled or serviced. Once you have used the Saxenda medicine in your pen, discard the used pen and begin a new one.
Never throw away Saxenda via household or water waste. Take any unwanted or expired Saxenda to your pharmacy and ask them to dispose of it safely.
Always keep treatment, needles and sharps bin containers out of sight and reach from children and pets.
Never share your Saxenda pen or needles with anybody else, even if they are experiencing the same symptoms.
